DiskDigger FAQ

This is an FAQ for DiskDigger, a (hopefully awesome) data recovery application. Forgive the brevity of this list. It will grow in the near future, I promise. No, really.

What operating systems does it support?

Windows 2000, Windows XP SP2 and higher, Windows Vista, and the latest betas of Windows 7. Limited testing has been done on 64-bit versions of Windows, but I don’t foresee any major issues.

What kind of license is it under?

DiskDigger is freeware (free for personal and commercial use (although donations are encouraged!)). For the complete license, please download the Zip file and read the license file therein.

Is it open-source?

No, it’s not. At least not for now. I may, however, release the source to the community in the future.

What file systems does it support?

DiskDigger has its own internal support for reading FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS file systems.

Is it portable?

The entire program is just a single executable file that you can run from anywhere. There’s nothing to “install,” and the program doesn’t leave any trace of having been run.

Can you add feature X? Can you add support for file format Y?

I would be happy to! Just send me an e-mail with a detailed description of the feature(s) that you would like to see in future versions of the program. Hey, do you know what would really motivate me to work on your feature request? A donation!

Hi, cool piece of software, it was featured on a Finnish computer site http://www.tietokone.fi/softa/tiedosto.asp?id=13706 as software of the day.
Personally, I would hugely appreciate if you released the source, I’d be very interested in taking a peek.

I have created a Bootable DVD with Diskdigger.exe to recover files from a Drive that won’t boot, but is mostly readable.
I get the error that This program must be run under Win32.
Is there a DOS version for these conditions?

Great App! Just curious. I’ve recovered several JPG files from a drive and they all seem to be at the same size…about 2″ x 2″. I was told these were originally 640×480 resolution. Is the file reduced when recovered? Thanks!

  9. Hasan says:

MAIN PROBLEM IS, ALL THE RETRIEVED FILES DO NOT HAVE THEIR
PREVIOUS NAMES TO RECOGNIZE OR SORT OUT. THESE ARE LIKE THIS……..
    SECTOR197671
    SECTOR198887
SAME FOR ALL WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT, PDF, JPG, VIDEO FILES.
THAT MEANS I WILL HAVE TO RENAME AGAIN ALL THE FILES ONE BY ONE.
THE PREVIOUS OF DATES OF ALL THE FILES WHEN THESE WERE FIRST MADE
ARE ALSO GONE. SO I CAN NOT SORT OUT BY DATES.
    PL. ADV.

Questions! I ran diskdigger on an external hard drive with a bad sector via usb 2. The scan took a couple weeks. 1st question is, is that normal?

Now it told me that the scan is complete but has not yet provided me with the list of files, I know they are there. This disk is still spinning so something is going on , second question, is there another process that diskdigger has to run through to produce the list or is something wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated!!!

  11. Aaron says:

    Diskdigger is fantastic!

Urgent request…can you allow deeper scans to pick up .ISO file types???

I got a system that failed, but diskdigger was able to recover many files…I only have left to get
is a video .ISO I created…I spend large hours working on this video.

Hope diskdigger can search for .ISO file types soon!!

  13. Dave DeBrota says:

Is it possible to determine from the “Sector Location” values of recovered files how long a file is? For example, if the first file found by Disk Digger is at Sector Location 960, and the second file found is at Sector Location 20992, can the length of the file be calculated?

  14. Ema says:

How I do I use this on my SD memory card?

  15. db says:

Plug your memory card into a card reader, then plug the card reader into your computer. It should then show up in DiskDigger.

  16. Ema says:

    Hi again,

I used to have some pictures on my Sd card that were taken on my old Samsung phone around 2006. I cannot find them at all using diskdigger! How can I get them back?????

    PLEASE HELP!

  17. Bayram says:

    Hi,
this is a great tool, but can you add to search outlook.pst (Mail Documents)please?
    Thanks

  18. Greg says:

Can you add functionality to “wipe” found deleted files?
When files are undeleted, you are writing it to a new area on the disk, rather than leaving it where it is – which means I can’t permanently delete the deleted file by deleting the restored file with a wiper program (which writes random data over the file).

  19. Shifty says:

The last comment from Greg is the only thing missing from this great program. Diskdigger has recovered 2 files (jpg) on my system that I cannot find the location of. I want to securely delete these files but am unable to do so. The option to delete from within the program would be a bonus.
