If you use Winamp you'll have to change an option to allow it to play FLVs. Silly Winamp people. To do so:

1. Open the Winamp preferences.
2. Go to the Input page, under Plug-ins.
3. Double-click on the plug-in named Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder.
4. Add ;FLV to the extension list (a semi-colon followed by "FLV").

Other than this, it's the same as my previous post.

If you have another player that won't work, poke around for a similar option. No guarantees.

Playing FLV files in Windows Media Player is quite simple...

Download FLV Splitter here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205650

Open the ZIP file you downloaded, and from it copy the file FLVSplitter.ax to your Windows folder (usually C:\WINDOWS\).

Click on the Start button, choose "Run", and type in:
regsvr32 FLVSplitter.ax

Viola. FLV videos will now play in Windows Media Player.

Note: When asked, you will still have to select Windows Media Player as the program to open them with. If it doesn't ask, right-click any FLV file and choose "Open With", then "Choose Program..."

I cannot stress how much easier it is to do a little power-using instead of all the traps you mentioned, and yet -someone- usually has to show you the apparently obvious. I am grateful to you for this little, awesome tip.
